Current is an interactive visualisation that displays the energy use data from 25 Australian households. Using the Xbox Kinect, users can change the speed at which they move through the visualisation while the Current web app introduces additional information regarding average cost, carbon and weather data and includes an interactive timeline. Public installation is the primary application for Current, personalising the energy issue for a wide audience.

Current combines the use of four datasets:

  • The Department of Industry and Science — Household energy use
  • The Bureau of Meteorology — Local temperatures
  • The Australian Bureau of Statistics — Household energy use and cost
  • Real-time physical data from the Xbox Kinect

Current is built using Python and Javascript, using the D3js library on the front end to create the visualisation and WebSockets and PyOpenNI for Kinect integration in the back end.
