CommuniMe

You're part of a family, you're a student, you're a young professional....and you're new to the city. Where do you live? What area best meets your needs so that you can walk to work, get to your gym classes on time and catch up with mates without worrying about bus timetables or parking limits?

There is evidence of a positive relationship between a sense of community and quality of life. A sense of community is when people have a feeling of belonging, an ability to express freedom, feel they have the potential to collaborate and share a common history with members. For example, when people feel that they can work, play and engage with their neighbours, it is possible that both individuals and communities are happier and more comfortable (Canterero et al., 2007).

CommuniMe links people with communities based on what they value. We have different preferences for where you want to live based on your interests, responsibilities, and priorities in life. We let you decide what's important. The application will allow people to engage with their communities by presenting them cultural and intellectual data such as the Population and Dwelling Census. We envision that the opportunity to learn about neighbourhoods will encourage community participation. The customer can identify areas that meets their needs; finding the ideal location that lets them do all the things you want to do with ease and comfort.

The user interface adopts an intuitive design, and maps geospatial data to increase accessibility and engagement from customers. It takes a different approach to broadcasting data; moving away from tables and spreadsheets to a visual presentation on a map, which encourages data exploration. Moreover, the application translates classifications and variables, from government data, to terms that people are familiar with. For example, we could take geographical classifications like meshblocks and present it to our customers in a way that is relevant to them.

This application resolves a market need by drawing out data from multiple sources in one location for customers to decide on the ideal location. It establishes a hub of 40 datasets from 11 different sources. Customers can engage with all this data in one location as opposed to trawling through the web. Unleashing the data will mean better decision making; and potentially a better fit with the community.

Moreover, it utilises an intelligent matching algorithm to identify the ideal community for you. We ask customers to rank their priorities (e.g. schools, gyms and supermarkets) and then we assign a weight to that rank. For example, your highest ranked item will have the greatest weight in providing your list of communities. But we also account for the count of each item so that neighbourhoods that have a lot of a good thing are on your radar too. For example, you might have rated cinemas lower down on your list. But if a suburb has quite a few of them, it may be presented as a more attractive community for you.

Moving forward, if customer data is collected, it could be commercialised to advise property developers to build based on their surroundings and draw in the intended target population. Furthermore, we expect to host more data, refine the user interface, link it to TradeMe addresses and increase mobile capability. Interested parties would be banks, insurance companies and government who would gain insight about suburbs and could use it to advise their decision making.

We have provided a functioning application in our homepage link. And in our Github repository, we have included our ideal user interface, as well as all other work that has gone into producing CommuniMe.
